A&B Ranch
about us,
I would like to introduce ourselves, and explain our intentions, with the establishment of our ranch.
We are Arlene and Bernard Kamp, lets start with Arlene, she is the driving person in regards to animal knowledge and experience. She is a certified groomer, dog trainer, Quality meat goat producer and veterinary assistant. Bernard her husband is a trained Agricultural Expert and holds a Bachelor degree from a Dutch University. That is enough about us. After living and working on a farm in western NY over the last 15 years we decided to start a new endevour." The Establishment of a profitable organic goat herd," {As close as possible organic} We all know 100% organic in goats is impossible without increasing the mortality rate, especially in the kids and does. The main problem are the parasites. So our first consideration was to select a goat breed that is parasite resistant and adaptable to a wide range of forage, and winter and summer hardiness. We selected the Spanish Goat as our main breed. See Spanish Goat page. After we selected the main goat breed Spanish, we purchased a small group of Spanish goats, originated in PA, NY, Oh. Which were in the blood lines of solid Spanish heritage.We now maintain a herd of Spanish of varies ages. To have emergency milk available for kids born, or for other problems, we also purchased a few Sanaan does, we will also add a few Boer and Kiko does to help improve meat value.
To keep our goal in the center, of our interest we will only cross does once they have established a reasonable parasite resistance.
So to recite our goals,
1=A healthy and parasite resistance herd of goats, {organic}
2=A mortality rate of kids not higher then 5%.
3=A Meat goat that can produce multiple births year around and a weight at sale profitable for the farm.
4= A goat that can be more than just meat, but also can produce milk, cashmere, an a nice packing goat.
We will also do our best to bring the Spanish Goat back into the attention of all goat producers and 4-H groups. There are far more woods then meadows in a large part of the eastern us. The combination of woods / grasses will eliminate overgrazing and poor health conditions of the goat population. Other points of interest: Goat rental for clearing brush. Goat research from a practical experience. Promoting sales of Spanish Goats to small family operations, and last but not least Behavioral studies to understand the goats likes and dislikes, to promote goat happiness and good health.
Additional to the goats we are also promoting Katahdin Sheep, and the Great Pyrenees guard dogs, Beagles. See other links.
When our goats go out to browse or on wood trips the ranking order is as follows, herd leader Arlene , second in command Kokopelli our main billy, then the followers the herd, lowest rank the docile sanaan, herd guardians last but not least Willow {beagle}, Rin-Tin {Jack Russell}.
